La Maison du Chapelier chambres d'hotes in Esperaza is 40km south of Carcassonne and 90km from Andorra in the heart of Cathars Country in the Aude Languedoc region of France. Built in 1923 by a rich industrialist, the house has many unusual features, many of which can be seen in the book "The Patrimony of the Aude".  Surrounded by hills and close to the Corbieres with many lovely walks to be found on the doorstep, our chambres d'hotes is the ideal place to relax and enjoy a holiday in the French countryside. On this site you can see some pictures of our rather strange but interesting Bed and Breakfast accommodation ( b&b -- chambre d'hote, hotel ). Enjoy breakfast in the baronial dining room which seats 20 or in the shady garden. We also have a swimming pool 8 by 4 metres and there is high speed wireless internet access available free of charge to guests. Rennes le Chateau, Aude

10 Km from Esperaza. Rennes le Chateau is one of the most visited places in the Aude region. Made famous by Dan Brown and his book and film the Da Vinci Code. Legend has it that a large amount of treasure was buried here by the Visigoths and, due to a priest, Francois Beranger Saunière, becoming suddenly wealthy,many believe the secret to finding it lies in the area. Alet les Bains, Aude

Now is an excellent time to buy property in this area. The Aude is still relatively undiscovered but the Immobilier market is starting to attract more interest with so many low cost carriers like Ryanair and Buzz flying in to Carcassonne and Perpignan and Toulouse, Montpellier and Barcelona not far away make it an excellent location. Quillan, Aude

Quillan, at the top of the Haute Valley of the Aude, close to the mountains, is a medium sized town 6km from Esperaza and is popular for white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the Aude riviere (Alet les Bains is another good place to go for white water sports). There are several hotels in Quillan (3 and 4 star) but if you want to stay there in the season book well ahead as there is great pressure on accommodation.
